Service History of 1st US Sharpshooters

The Sharpshooters were not always deployed as a regimental or brigade size unit. Often individual companies or smaller units would be detached to different divisions or brigades for specific duties. During 1862 the 1st regiment was split into two battalions and attached to Hooker’s and Sumner’s Corps respectively. Both regiments were brigaded in January 14th 1863 by order of General Burnside. “From this Brigade commanded by Colonel Berdan, detachments will be sent from time to time to the different grand divisions on detached service, to be used as Sharpshooters.”
